What is a biomarker and what is its potential role in lupus?

They are essentially proteins, enzymes, or other molecules that can be used to trace or diagnose diseases.  In the future, biomarkers could potentially help doctors by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, prognosis, and monitoring how people with lupus respond to different treatments.
